Building Editera

Notes from a publishing house building its own back office. One story per issue: a real problem, the screen that fixed it, what it took.

What’s in an issue

Four short parts, always the same.

Sample · No. 01

This is the first Building Editera. Once a month I’ll write down what changed in the house we’re building for small publishers, and what we learned running Marmot Books on it.

Insert

What we added this month.

[This month’s addition in two or three sentences – filled in from the house’s reports before sending.]

Delete

What we removed or stopped – and why.

At Marmot we used to pay for [N] separate tools. This month we cancelled [two of them]. Their work now lives in the same record as the books.

Stet

What we kept, despite the temptation.

One price per house, not per seat. Most software charges per user. We won’t, because the whole point is that your second person gets in without a calculator.

Margin note

One question from a reader – answered.

A publisher asked how long it takes to move a house in. The plain answer: we don’t know yet for any house but ours. We’ll learn it with the first ten, together, and I’ll write the numbers here.

If something here is wrong for your house, reply. I read everything.Nikolay · Marmot Books · Editera
